This is really fucking devastating! The first "advice" that everytime comes to mind in those situations is the most stupidly banal "you should be yourself". But how to be yourself, when there are multiple parts of you and they all are real, and by choosing only one part you can lose all the others.

Nathan sounds like a mix between a paradox and a Gordian knot. On one hand, he’s choosing to live dual lives, each with their own chosen AND unchosen dangers to his mental & physical wellbeing and circumstances. On the other, there probably IS an undoing that would break the cycle. It’s just not one he sees as viable, and that’s entirely his decision to make independent of anyone else’s opinions, judgement or projected intentions.
This messy mix is square in the zone you love to write in, Maxwell. I can see why you’re treating it so well.
